Can Dogs & Cats Damage Your Lawn?

Cat

Almost everyone has a furry family member such as a dog or a cat! They may be a person’s best friend but they are not your lawn’s best friend. If you have outdoor cats or you let your dog go outside to use the bathroom, it’s actually very detrimental to your lawn. The pet’s urine can actually burn the lawn and leave the grass with bare spots or discolored grass. Dog and cat urine have high amounts of nitrogen and other hazardous things that can leave damage. Some spots could be in one single spot or in multiple depending on if your dog is a male or female! Some lawns will resolve the issue on their own but in most cases need some help.

There’s ways to fix the damage your cats or dogs may create! The first suggested step is to make sure the pH levels in the soil are where they are supposed to be. Soil tests will most likely come into play in this case. The next step is to remove any dead grass caused by your pet. Once this is done you can put down seed to help that area grow and starter fertilizer which helps the seeds germinate. It’s tough to have pets urinate in one specific spot but to keep any further damage from happening, try to have them go in the same spot so it doesn’t kill any of the other grass. You can pick a designated area in your lawn and use a natural wood mulch, Be sure it’s not one that’s made of cocoa bean hulls since that is toxic for your furry friends.

Lastly, be mindful of fertilizer applications since it is not safe for pets after it is immediately applied. You should wait a minimum of 4 to 6 hours after the treatments are applied so the dogs or cats stay out of the way of becoming sick!

There are pet friendly fertilizers, however, they still can be harmful to pets due to the ingredients. So just be mindful of what fertilizer you use and if it’s pet friendly. If you any questions about your pets and lawn care please contact us at 732-475-5500
